The Fort Collins wall mural that needs to die
So, there my daughter and I were, driving down Howes Street on Tuesday morning when I saw something so disheartening I felt quickened like I'd caught a pie in my face.
Propped up against the back wall of a city building, I saw the city had salvaged the wall mural from the demolished Poudre Valley Creamery. The mural is deeply deserving of dislike, which I have done for as long as I've lived here. But someone decided to save the mural, and I was so shocked to see that, that I stopped and photographed it.
As you can see from the photos, the mural seems innocuous enough and shows the silhouette of a couple dancing. What's terrible about the mural is that that couple is all you ever, ever, ever see. There's nothing else for the eye to find except the couple's frozen moves. Technically, there's other stuff in the mural, like the child, balloons and Horsetooth Rock, but I never noticed any of that until I photographed it.
Over the years, I've felt like a crank for not liking the mural, and I've kept my opinion to myself, but Tuesday when I saw the mural had been salvaged, I didn't hold back. My daughter surprised me by saying that she, too, had never liked the mural. Oh? I asked her why. "I hate it because the colors are so gross. They make the picture ugly."
