Music writing from Francis Davis

Taking our ears there: Francis Davis (28-Nov-05), Not bourgie: Albert Ayler met Paul Gonsalves and Sonny Rollins's saxophone lineage was re-established, Village Voice [New York City weekly newspaper; the first of the arts-oriented tabloids now known as alternative weeklies], online at villagevoice.com (accessed 22-Sep-07).

Here's music writing, like you used to read in the Village Voice every week (before the Voice was "Clear-Channeled" by New Times Media in 2005 and mainstreamed): A review by Francis Davis of David Murray's CD, Waltz Again, a review where Davis leads us through 30 years of Murray's career and 50 years of jazz history, including an outline of jazz collaborations with string sections, so that at the end of the review, when Davis says, "These juxtapositions are tense and lovely, but it's when Murray, his rhythm section, and the strings rub against one another – on the uptempo portions of the suite and the surging "Dark Secrets" – that sparks fly", we hear what Davis heard.
