Who's kicking who?

U.S. Iraq fatalities, prepared by Ed Stephan, Professor Emeritus at Western Washington UniversityThe Sydney Morning Hearld reports that, upon arriving in Australia this week, President Bush informed the Australian Deputy Prime Minister, Mark Vaile, that "We're kicking ass" in Iraq.

As Steve Benen points out, writing at his blog, the Carpetbagger Report, the President's boast contrasts sharply with Tuesday's GAO report, which documents how the Iraqi government has fulfilled only three of the Administration's 18 benchmarks. The President's boast is also at odds with yesterday's findings from an independent assessment of Iraq, which was prepared by a panel led by retired Marine Gen. James Jones. The Jones report concludes that Iraqi security forces cannot control the country for another 12-18 months, and the Iraqi national police should be disbanded.

Furthermore, the average number of U.S. deaths per day in Iraq is holding steady and possibly increasing, as graphically shown in the figures prepared by Ed Stephan, who is a Professor Emeritus at Western Washington University.

Given the weight of evidence contradicting the President's assertion about Iraq, you have to ask yourself, Who's kicking who?
