João Bosco e Vinícius: Mugging for the girls

João Bosco e Vinícius Pop music
With a song so great it reached the U.S.: João Bosco e Vinícius, online at joaoboscoevinicius.com.br (accessed 24-Aug-07).

These guys are singer-guitarists who play MBP (Musica Popular Brasilera). They love melody, so they must be famous – and their guitars have the warmth you expect from bossa nova, but their music is produced to accentuate the aural itch their voices create in your ear, regardless of their singing in Portuguese. And lastly, they're natural entertainers, which you have to respect.

After a while, though, you listen to their music, and a shadow falls across your enthusiasm. The shadow of... mugging. Mugging is what makes you recoil from Paul McCartney's doe eyes. Mugging is what makes heavy metal a joke to anyone who loves punk. Mugging is what makes Cab Calloway-wannabes fail. Mugging is what's so stomach-churning repulsive about smooth jazz. It's all that saccharine sweetness that assaults you like a lady's fart.

But back to Misters João Bosco e Vinícius. Their problem is they play for the girls and are more than willing to throw in cutesy vocal effects... But have at it, guys.

Want to hear them at their best? Check out Quero Provar Que Te Amo, which is available on their self-titled 2004 debut album. Or, is that their second album? Regardless, crank up your LimeWire, and point it in the direction of Rio (where you'll avoid the mistake of confusing João Bosco e Vinícius with João Bosco).
