Follow the money: Maha [Barbara O’Brien] (14-May-07), Unhealthy care, The Mahablog [liberal political blog based in the New York City area], online at mahablog.com (accessed 15-May-07).

This blog article explains how profit-driven healthcare fails to optimize health.

And why should it? Maximizing health is one thing, and maximizing profit is another. Medical profit comes from making sick people well (and the sicker a person is at the start of medical care, the greater the opportunity for profit). In contrast, maximizing health comes from keeping healthy people healthy, which – clearly – is not an endeavor that's going to make anyone monetarily rich. The article offers a satisfying overview of a gaping defect in market-driven healthcare (not that a values votin', Republican evangelical Christian would care about such a thing, which happens to be a topic that the article also addresses, with respect to the right-wing denial of the U.S. infant mortality problem).
